Healing Joint & Muscular Pain with Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda mostly Joint & Muscle pains are caused by the aggravation of vata (air) dosha. It is a condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and aggravation of vata. (Ama is a toxic by-product of improper digestion.)This circulates in the whole body and deposits or gets collected at the sites which are weaker. When it deposits in the joints and at the same time there is aggravation of vata, it results in a disease called amavata that all results of Joint Pains.
Classification of Muscular pains according to Ayurveda
VATA TYPE: The nature of Vata pain includes throbbing, cutting and severe discomfort which is variable and migrating. Increases in cold condition, exposure to cold, eating or drinking cold foods and drinks will exacerbate Vata type pain. Other general symptoms include dry or scaly skin, cracking or stiffness of joints, constipation, gas, nervousness, irritability, fear, anxiety and anemia. Vata pain improves when hot therapies are applied.
PITTA TYPE: Pitta type pain presents with a burning sensation, redness or inflammation and increases in hot weather or exposure to heat. Other general symptoms include diarrhea, loose or frequent stools, anger, sweating, fever or high irritability.
KAPHA TYPE: Kapha type pain includes swelling, stiffness, edema or loss of movement of the affected muscle or group of muscles. Increases in cold, wet weather will exacerbate kapha pain. Other general symptoms include heaviness, aches, excessive oil secretions, dull and persistent pain and mucus in stool.
Ayurveda’s Approach to Pain Management and Prevention
Ayurveda, the science of life, advocates not just the management of pain but also address pain prevention by advising certain daily rituals which are effective to prevent all pain types.
ABHYANGA – Oil application over the entire body followed by warm water bath. Ayurveda advises this to be an everyday entity to manage proper blood circulation and nourishment to the whole body which in turn, prevents the pain and maintains the youth and clear skin. Ayurveda recommends this as a part of a daily healthcare regimen.
PURIFICATION OF THE BODY – According to Ayurveda, the accumulation of toxins is the primary causes of muscular pain. Ayurveda advises different purification therapies depending on the seasons and the transition between seasons’ ending and beginning. Therefore, a purgation type of purification therapy is advised during winter or end of winter.
